Whangawehi River looking at Invertebrates in the water

Room 2 had the most awesome day on the Whangawehi river. We had Nanny Rae and Uncle Arthur with us. We were also lucky to have Shane with us. He works for the Hawkes Bay Regional Council looking after the streams and rivers around here. He was interested in what we liked and valued about the Whangawehi river like swimming, whitebait, and water clarity. He reminded us about the eels that lived in the Whangawehi and how old they were.
We walked up the Whangawehi to the rapids then looked at the river through the turbidity cylinder, we looked for bugs in the water. Some people swam in the holes where whitebait and eels live. Very brave!!

Whakarewa Beach Run

The weather was doubtful, but the clouds and fog lifted, the sun came out and our tamariki once again put their best foot forward. Many thanks to our sports coordinator Miss Kereru who coordinated this event, another great turn out with our children’s loyal supporters. Every single child at school completed this event, some pushing themselves again to another level. Watching their faces as they crossed the finish line was gold and they all need to be super proud of themselves!  Congratulations to our place getters: Junior 1st Place Ryan Campbell, 2nd place Keylia McAlpine 3rd place Waitama Crowley. Middle School 1st Place Rebecca Campbell, 2nd Place Jahnei Lafaiki, 3rd Place Lisa Delaney. Preparations for Silver Enviro-School Celebration

Today Room 2 looked at our garden, which we have been giving special attention in preparation for the Silver Enviro-school celebration. We thought that our flowers are looking gorgeous and that we should write about it on our blogs so everyone else can see too. Check out the Room 2 blogs for our photos and super sentences describing our stunning flowers.

Enviroschools seafood day

Room 2 had an amazing day out learning about Crayfish, Kina,  Paua and Fish.

We started at Whangawehi where the Aurora sped in at exactly 11:50 looking like a James Bond Boat. Then  Tom and Selwyn unloaded the live  crayfish  in crates and put them on the truck.

We followed the truck to Nanny Doi's factory and Selwyn and Tom put the crayfish in a  pool. Then they told us about crayfish and crayfishing. We learnt how to tell the males from the females. Everyone held a crayfish.

After lunch we had 3 workshops: Paua and Kina with Auntie Ali, Measuring fish with Whaea Jenny and looking at rock pools with Nanny Rae.

It was an excellent day. Even the weather was perfect. Thanks to Whaea Jenny, the presenters and all the whanau who came to support us.

Algebra Learning

This term in Room 2, we are learning about Algebra.  More specifically, patterns and relationships. What patterns have you made before? What colours have you used? What shapes have you used? Has anyone made neclaces before we you have made a pattern. We will be using lots of materials and equipment to build, create, continue and talk about patterns.  Here are some website links that will also help you with your learning. So what are you waiting for?

Gymnastics Festival

Our beautiful children put their best foot forward on Friday at the Wairoa Inter-school 2015 Gymnastics Festival. Beam, Box, Skipping, Floor and Bar routines had all been practiced and polished this term. Some personal goals/bests were achieved and it was a super proud moment to watch. Many thanks to the Gisborne Gymnastics members that travelled down to judge and our whanau that came to tautoko.

Room 2 Garden

Room 2 have been inspired to  tidy our garden and made it look beautiful.   We have found lots of flower plants under the weeds. We definitely have some very keen gardeners who worked very hard.

Duffy Books

Room 2 enjoyed the Duffy Book Hero, Tipene Harmer.  We watched him beat box using only his voice to make music.  Tipene was a rapper who once had a record on the top ten. He told us how he needs to read and write to be a rapper and gave us some examples of the rhyming words that he uses in his raps. Room 2 were  pleased to get their Duffy books signed by Tipene.

Wairoa Winter Warmers Big Day Out

On Wednesday Room 2 had an action packed Wairoa day.
At the library the Librarian read us a fishing story using her funny voices.  Then we went upstairs where we choose our own books and a pen to keep, and we got some treats.  We got so many cool prizes just because we did all of our 10 winter warmers book reviews. Jahnei.

Next we walked to the pools to have a swimming lesson from Aunty Sarah. She is a very talented swimming teacher and she showed me how to dive.  When you dive you put your hands up and cover your ears and push off with your feet. If you do this it will work and your dive will look amazing.  Then we got to have free time to play stuck in the mud.  The swim was the most marvelous part of the day.  By Memaree

As part of our inquiry on the human body we went to the dental clinic to visit Grace. She answered our questions and showed us all of the equipment that she uses to look after out teeth.  We saw all the rooms including the store room and Grace’s office. She had a very special chair that went up and down.

We went to the skateboard park to play on our scooters and skateboards. We got to go really fast down the ramp and over the bumps.  Rome did jumps. It was fun because we had races and everyone had a turn. Rebecca

The best part of the day was playing with our friends.
